Destination-Inspired Summer Outfits We Love

City Skyscraper or Mediterranean Yacht? Our Fashion Editors Have You Covered With Six Vacation-Ready Outfits for Your Dream Night Out.

Summer is here (our thermometer is pushing 95ºF at the moment) and, with summer comes summer travel. Whether or not your bags are packed and ready to go, chances are good that you’re more than ready to be leaving on a jet plane.

Even if you’re staying home this summer, there’s nothing better than a dose of travel-inspired fashion inspiration. Sometimes the best place to wear a new outfit is your own backyard! Whether you’re about to fly around the world or you’re living the summer staycation of your dreams, we’ve put together half a dozen resort-themed looks to inspire your wardrobe and keep you feeling fresh all summer.

Yachting in the Med

Call it Euro Summer, call it the Club Med Aesthetic…we’re obsessed with that quintessential “Italian Island/South of France/Grecian Goddess” look! Focusing on high-quality yet flowing textiles, crisp yet relaxed silhouettes, and everything else that whispers “vacation” in the most alluring of European accents, this look focuses on creating an aesthetic that bridges the gap between refinement and revelry. It’s ideal for sipping a martini at an outdoor jazz club or clinking glasses onboard a yacht. (It’s also giving Meredith Blake vibes, which we’ve seen popping up everywhere this summer!)

Whether or not you’re going yachting in the Mediterranean (and, if you are, then where’s our invite?!) you can get the Euro summer vibe by combining a few wardrobe staples into a truly timeless outfit that will have you ready to live la dolce vita. Start with a semi-structured linen shift dress or peplum-top-and-skirt combo in ivory or a light, summery shade (we love this dress from Amanda Uprichard!) and accent with bold touches of gold through your jewelry. (This vintage Movado from Louis Martin plus the coordinating tennis necklace is a match made in heaven!)

Finish the look with touches of natural fibers through your hat, shoes, and bag—the bigger the better! We adore the juxtaposition of flawless tailoring against the relaxed “beach bag” look of an oversized tote, and, while a pair of espadrille wedges might not be the most practical for walking on the deck of a yacht, we’d take our chances.

If you want to embrace Mediterranean living through more than just your outfit, here are some tips to get the vibe:

  • Find a local kayak or boat rental company and get out on the water—river, ocean, or lake—with your friends and a picnic lunch.
  • Spend time in the sun (SPF included) soaking up Vitamin D with your favorite playlist and a new book—lemonade also encouraged!
  • Whip up a simple pasta dinner with garden-fresh vegetables—if you still have extra tomatoes, we’d be glad to take them off your hands…
  • Explore your own community by finding a local farm and taking a tour or harvesting your own fruit…then use it to make a fresh pie or other summer dessert.

Glamping in Yosemite

“Let’s go camping!” If you’ve been on Instagram, you’ve probably seen the trending reels—enthusiastic text spells out an invitation to explore the great outdoors as the camera pans across a luxury hotel room or clothing boutique and the audio moans “no, no, noooooo”. Quite frankly, most glamour girls aren’t immediately up for camping…but who can resist glamping?

We can’t—especially when it takes us to new and beautiful locations or gives us a chance to experience luxe-meets-rustic accommodations such as vintage airstream trailers or fully stocked yurts. In honor of the glamping trend, we’re fusing high fashion with natural colors…while adding in a bit of silver-camper sparkle through jewelry from Tiffany & Co., a groovy (do people still use that word?) metallic shoulder bag, and a pair of Chanel platform heels. It’s all about balance, right? Though, if you can actually balance in those heels, we envy you.

But it’s not all glitz and glam—the moss-inspired shade of this Toccin mini dress (okay, fine, there are more sequins) and coordinating Prada bucket hat call to mind summer days spent searching for hidden waterfalls and fairies in forest glades.

Even if glamping isn’t quite your style, we could all use a little more of the great outdoors. Here’s how to embrace the beauty of nature this summer:

  • Find a restaurant in your area that features farm-fresh or foraged vegetables in its cuisine. This could be as familiar as locally harvested lettuce in a bistro salad or as experimental as fried moss at a fine dining restaurant—yes, it’s a thing.
  • Spend a night under the stars—drag a sleeping bag or air mattress onto your patio or porch, stock up on snacks, and spend some time stargazing and appreciating the cool night air. Bonus points if you stay out all night to catch the sunrise!
  • Devote an afternoon to capturing the natural splendor all around you. Go on a photographic scavenger hunt in your neighborhood, pick wildflowers in a forest or field, or collect local stones and mosses to create a mini terrarium for your desk.
  • Build a bonfire (or get a no-mess-no-stress mini one) and roast s’mores at twilight. Bonus points for creative toppings—some of our favorites are lemon curd and salted caramel. We’ve also been known to build our sandwiches on peanut butter cookies…

Along for the Ride

The girl who’s wearing this outfit is happy to go anywhere this summer—but she definitely wouldn’t mind if that ride ended up in Paris! Still, she knows that one of the best parts of the journey is the getting there part itself. (And, with a jeweled Judith Leiber passport cover, who can blame her?) In a rush-rush society where the price of time continues to rise, it’s important to remember to take time to enjoy the simple things as well as the grandiose ones.

And this outfit is celebrating a little bit of both. In one regard, it’s simple and to-the-point with a LoveShackFancy shift dress and structured pink headband to keep an on-the-go girl’s hair at bay. On the other…well, those are Rene Caovilla chandelier sandals after all—and could anything less than a Dior watch really be expected to keep you from missing your flight?

Even though it’s summer, we aren’t quite finished living la vie en rose—and now we’re really seeing in pink with these Miu Miu shades. With pink lenses, pink frames, and (of course!) plenty of sparkle, you’ll be seeing the entire world like it’s part of a cotton candy dream.

Whether your ride is one around the world or your daily commute to and from work, here are a few ways to slow down and enjoy the journey this summer:

  • Select a new “signature scent” for summer and make a point of spritzing it on every time you leave the house. By the end of the season, that perfume will develop a scent connotation that will always bring back special summer memories.
  • Take a detour! If you can, choose a scenic route to or from work or even switch up your method of transportation—swap the bus for a leisurely bike ride or share a ride to work with your friends—carpool karaoke encouraged!
  • Develop a habit of taking evening walks when the sun goes down. Leave your phone behind and listen to the music of your surroundings, whether it’s of chirping birds or kids playing in their yard. Breathe in the scent of summer and let your mind wander as your feet do the same.
  • Take yourself on a quirky “food tour” of your town by picking one of your favorite foods (donuts, ice cream, iced coffee) and visiting as many places as you can find that sell your treat of choice. Try one at every place and take notes for next time. Who knows…you might discover a new go-to snack spot!

Swimming in Maui

Why go to Disney when you can live out your own Little Mermaid dreams in this beachy-keen outfit? Celebrating everything we love about the ocean, this under-the-sea ensemble offers the perfect blend of elegance and nonchalance—exactly what you need for strolling on the shore or splashing in the waves. (Though, if you’re going to be getting up close and personal with the surf and sand, we recommend leaving the Louboutins at home.)

Although it might be a bit dressy for the beach, we can’t get over how perfect this seafoam shift from Alice + Olivia would look on the beach at sunset. Of course, we love everything from Alice + Olivia, so the fashion world is your oyster…so to speak. If it’s real oysters you want, don’t miss Lulu Guinness London’s perfectly whimsical bag. The shape of a giant shell, it opens to reveal a giant acrylic pearl—a surprise just for the wearer.

With the help of a few aquatic-inspired accessories worthy of sunken treasure (the diamond bracelet from Louis Martin alone could set you back over $30k) this outfit is ready to glisten in the sunlight. Retro Tiffany & Co. earrings from Elsa Peretti add a celestial twist to the ocean aesthetic, and this headband from Jennifer Behr looks like the result of a long day of beachcombing.

While we don’t all have the budget to buy ourselves the equivalent of an entire chest of pirate gems, we can embrace an island vibe to make our life on land a little more magical:

  • Play in the pool! If you don’t have a pool of your own, buy a small inflatable one from a local variety store and enjoy soaking your feet and legs in the water after a long day of work.
  • Go beachcombing on land—spend an afternoon going on a treasure hunt at your local thrift or antique stores. Who knows—you might find some vintage Tiffany hiding in the shadows of a dusty case!
  • Incorporate fresh seafood into your diet. If you live near a port city, take a drive down to the docks and haggle with the fishermen; some of them make a living selling fish directly off of their boat.
  • Make each day sparkle. Aside from breaking out the glittery glam items when you’re headed out on the town, make an effort to wear your favorite jewelry or apply sparkly lip gloss on the “normal” days, too.

Dancing in NYC

While those of us who live the big city life year-round might be dreaming of bucolic days in the countryside or unhurried afternoons by the beach, we know more than a few small-town girls who have stars in their eyes over the idea of a “city break” vacation. (It’s us. We’re those girls.) If your summertime wanderlust has you dreaming of nights on big-city rooftops or dancing in low-lit clubs, this is the outfit for you.

This Staud minidress is all the glitter you need—after all, it comes complete with a rhinestone-embroidered rendition of the New York City skyline on its hem—but we’ve never had a problem with going (a little or a lot) overboard. So, we paired the dress with a match-made-in-heaven handbag from Judith Leiber for the ultimate summer-in-NYC look. And, to celebrate the city, we made sure to add a headband from Ellen Hunter NYC, one of our favorite big-city hair jewelry designers.

You’ve likely noticed the name Louis Martin popping up a few (dozen) times already, but we can’t help but draw attention to two more statement pieces from the Rockefeller Center-based family-owned jewelers. Trimmed in diamonds, the vintage Hamilton watch is a statement piece on its own, but a multi-diamond necklace reminiscent of a crescent moon over the city is equally as enchanting. And you’ll be ready to dance the night away in these Balmain stilettos, boasting bows trimmed with enough rhinestones so as to illuminate the entire city.

If you’re dreaming of big-city energy from a smaller setting or are looking to romanticize your own life in New York, New York, here are some suggestions for making the most of summertime in the city:

  • Visit a (figuratively) cool speakeasy or bar to help you beat the heat. Avoid dehydrating alcoholic beverages and go for a refreshing mocktail infused with seasonal fruit.
  • Don’t get lost in the crowd! Make an effort each day for a week to do one little thing to stand out. Whether it’s wearing your favorite sundress, taking a little extra time to do your hair, or showing unexpected kindness, make it count.
  • Spend an afternoon at the museum—it could be the Met or it could be your local art gallery. Wherever you go, don’t be in a hurry. Take time to slow down, examine each work of art, and consider how it makes you feel.
  • Sample some street eats. If you don’t have a chance to get an authentic NYC “dirty water dog”, you can probably still find a food cart out and about in your town—be adventurous and try something new!

Wine Tasting in Napa

There’s something so alluring about the Napa Valley, with its sun-drenched vineyards and vine-blanketed hills, not to mention its close proximity to California landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge. Visiting American wine country is like getting a postcard from Tuscany while eating a perfectly grilled cheeseburger—it’s the ideal juxtaposition of American flavor and European flair. Even if you don’t drink, there’s no more beautiful place than Napa to appreciate the natural beauty of farmland and rolling hills.

To celebrate the beauty of wine country, we’ve put together the grape-est getup in a collection of pastel grape hues. Beginning with a Bronx and Banco dress embellished in violet-colored 3D flowers, we instantly call to mind the natural beauty of Napa and its surrounding areas. To offer a more structured counterbalance to the whimsical embellishments of our chosen dress, we added a duet of Versache pumps and a matching envelope handbag in the same delectable shade of lavender.

Part of the beauty of the Napa Valley is its simplicity—even with its historic downtown and incredible Victorian mansions, many of which have been converted into inns and boutique hotels. To honor that no-frills aesthetic here we’re keeping accessories simple, with only a golden headband of ginkgo leaves and one last antique watch from our friends at Louis Martin—this one a vintage Omega with a subtle leaf detailing. And, just in case the California sun begins to get too strong, we’ve added a luxury hand fan to chase away the heat.

There’s nothing like summer in wine country but, if you’re stuck in the city or aren’t exactly sure how to enjoy the Napa Valley from a “dry” perspective, here’s how you can get the aesthetic without buying a bottle:

  • Wander around a winery. In many locations around the United States, you can visit a winery just to look around—no tour required! Appreciate the architecture of the outbuildings and the landscaping required to produce enough grapes to concoct your favorite brew.
  • Cook with wine—and actually add it to your meal. Better yet, mix yourself a mocktail to keep the booze for the food. Look up a recipe that utilizes wine (white is ideal for toasty summer days) and tie on your apron, chef!
  • Take a bike ride to a local farm or garden. The Napa Valley boasts an impressive bike trail between wineries, but you don’t have to go to California to enjoy taking a pair of wheels for a spin.
  • Up your charcuterie game. Pick up a loaf of local bread or a wheel of handmade cheese and practice your presentation skills (snacking required) until you have a board you’d be ready to present to a handful of hungry tourists.
