Derived from the Greek for Venus—the first heavenly body to illuminate the dusk, named for the mythical goddess of beauty and victory—the Latin vesper designates not only the twilight hour but also the reverence of evening prayer. 

Although it existed in relative obscurity for much of modern history, the word rose to prominence in the mid twentieth century when the world met Vesper Lynd, James Bond’s stylish and secretive love interest. An enigmatic and alluring character, she served as the namesake for Bond’s iconic martini order—shaken, not stirred. Over time, Vesper ventured from the pages of fiction to those of the drink list. Today, anyone can indulge in a vesper martini at their favorite cocktail bar or jazz club.
